Peter Hall Resident Nurse Job Description
The Peter Hall Resident Nurse (PHRN) works with Sias Office of International Scholars (OIS), and the Sias clinic to provide medical advice to the foreign community as well as coordinating and assisting in translation for medical procedures at area medical facilities. The PHRN also advises teachers on the medical reimbursement process.
The Resident Nurse’s Core Responsibilities
- The Resident Nurse (RN) will provide medical consultation concerning the medical needs of residents in the foreign community and will recommend appropriate medical treatment for these needs
- Will utilize the bi-lingual clinic nurse assigned to help the foreign community as a medical translator or provide translation herself (if able) for medical needs that require a visit to a hospital or clinic including emergency trips to the hospital at night.
- Shall organize and oversee an intern program whereby nursing students can gain experience working with and translating for foreigners in medical settings
- Will assist teachers in navigating cultural issues related to their medical care while in the hospital
- The RN will provide support by finding others to help with the care of patients while in the hospital. This care includes providing food, and the personal needs of the patient.
- Will make him/herself available for two hours on a weekly basis to the foreign teachers for medical consolation
- Will offer advice to administration (OIS) concerning policy matters related to the health of the community in Peter Hall.
The Resident Nurse’s Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist teachers in submitting medical receipts for insurance reimbursement
Qualifications
- Must be a Registered Nurse with experience in an Emergency Room, or as an EMT.
- Should be able to assess medical conditions, and make recommendations for medical care
- Should be kind and empathetic to those who are experiencing physical discomfort
- Should have some experience working in a cross-cultural environment
- Should have good communication skills both in English and to Non-native English speakers
- Prefer candidates with at least an intermediate level of spoken Chinese
- Ability to set boundaries between personal and professional life, both with him/herself and with patients/community members.
- The Provincial Visa office requires 2-years teaching experience or a 120-hour TESOL certificate. This policy changes year by year.
Working Conditions, Requirements for Work
- Flexible work hours—may be at night
- Will make house calls, and accompany teachers to the clinic and hospital
- Office hours conducted in the housing director’s office
- Will work as a nurse 15 hour per week
- Will teach half a teaching load as defined in the standard Sias contract (6 class hours of academic lecture or 9 hours of Oral English instruction)

- Salary determined by degree and years working at Sias (download chart). Salaries start from 6000-9000 RMB (900-1200 USD) a month depending on the degree attained. Every year teachers get a raise and signing a 3-year contract after the first semester gives teachers a 16.7% raise.

Faculty Demographics:
We have 130 foreign faculty teachers and 11 Foreign Administrators and 50 dependents (children and non-working spouses). 22 Families, 10 couples without children and about 70 single teachers. 80% of foreign communities are Americans and the rest are Canadian, Filipino, Indian, Jamaican, Hong Kong, Russian, Japanese, Mexican, Korean and German.
